What is cupping?

Cupping is a traditional Chinese medical therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This suction is typically generated by either heating the air within the cup or by using a mechanical pump. Once applied, the cups create a vacuum effect that draws the skin and underlying tissue upward into the cup.

In Chinese medicine, cupping is believed to promote the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood within the body, helping to alleviate stagnation and promote healing. It is often used to treat a variety of conditions, including muscle tension, pain, inflammation, respiratory issues, and digestive disorders.

Does it hurt/leave a mark?

During a cupping session, the cups are usually left in place for several minutes, creating a sensation of tightness and warmth on the skin. Sometimes, the cups may be moved around to target specific areas of concern or to stimulate acupuncture points.

After the cups are removed, temporary marks may be left on the skin, typically in the form of circular bruises or discolorations. These marks are not painful and usually fade within a few days. In Chinese medicine, the appearance of these marks is often interpreted as an indication of the level of stagnation or imbalance in the body.

Overall, cupping is considered a safe and effective therapy within the context of Chinese medicine, offering a natural and non-invasive approach to promoting health and well-being.
